Dr. Reginald Bibby, professor of sociology at the University of Lethbridge, has been charting religious trends in Canada for three decades. As Bibby recorded in his book, Restless Gods: The Renaissance of Religion in Canada, within the last 10 years “close to one in two Canadians is actually claiming that they’ve experienced God. Three in four believe in a god who cares for them personally ... eighty-six per cent believe life has meaning beyond what we ourselves can give it.” And indeed, who’s to say one can’t find meaning in the unseen, particularly when — as voiced by Madonna and Gibson — the material world proves so dissatisfying? Consider life’s indisputable yet invisible qualities. One cannot deny, for example, the reality of X-rays, magnetism, gravity, and even the simple existence of the wind. As well, millions of satellite and radio waves are transmitted daily, worldwide, unheard by the ear and invisible to the eye, only to be exposed when converted by a dish or radio. Is it possible that the human heart acts as a converter for transmitted spiritual waves? This concept is strange to a world that sees the heart as merely a vital organ. Yet former CTV news-anchor Pamela Wallin recently discovered scientific evidence of the heart beating to a different, albeit unseen, drum, after reading The Heart’s Code by Paul Pearsall. “Researchers have found that the human heart ... may be the repository of the soul,” she paraphrases. “The heart may define the essential character of our whole existence — our spirit and our soul.” If that’s the case, we should pay close attention to what our heart is saying. Dennis Marcellino, former member of The Tokens (“The Lion Sleeps Tonight”), believes that listening to our heart will lead us to our Creator. He writes, “ ... human beings were designed with an experiential awareness of their designer built into their hearts, by their designer ... ” Yet, while we are wired by God to know Him, worldly interference — the material things of society — can create a ‘bad connection.’ For Marcellino, it took a 35-year
journey through 22 world philosophies (Scientology, New Age Movement,
Psychocybernetics, Rolfing, Higher Consciousness, Hypnosis, etc.) and living
in the fast lane — sex, drugs and rock ‘n’ roll — before the award-winning
mathematician finally connected with his Creator. Eventually, Marcellino’s passion for music taught him the importance of being ‘in tune’ with his heart. By listening inwardly, he learned to decipher what he was looking for, including answers to important questions such as “How do we make males and females get along?” and “How do we deal with inner feelings?” Marcellino discovered the truth of Deuteronomy 4:29 in the Bible; “If ... you seek the Lord your God, you will find Him if you look for Him with all your heart.” Through his years of seeking, Marcellino realized the only way he could fill the emptiness in his heart was by personally accepting God’s love, that is, the sacrifice of His Son. “When I did finally accept Jesus as my Lord and Saviour in 1982, a power and a peace came into my heart that was not there, previously,” the 56-year-old explains. “That ‘effect’ was caused solely by the act of believing in Jesus and making Him the head of my life.” Author and pastor Dr. Charles Stanley validates Marcellino’s discovery, saying, “You can search high and low and to the ends of the earth, but when you have the love of God residing in your heart, you have the answer to your greatest needs.” (In Touch Magazine) In his book, Why Are We Here? (Lighthouse Publishing), Marcellino describes how, through scientific research and years of searching Scripture, he discovered the reality of God. In order to free the heart to be with its designer, he believes it’s essential to answer the questions of the mind. To begin with, the author claims, “scientific evidence for the existence of God is even stronger than the evidence for the existence of the atom (which also has never been seen or photographed).” Marcellino then backs-up this statement with astounding facts about the universe, provoking the reader to acknowledge the possibility of an intimate Maker. There has to be an Intelligence, he says, because the universe is an intelligent design, not a random evolvement. “If the first atom was unintelligent and spontaneously generated,” writes Marcellino, “why did all other basic matter follow the same complex path?” Secondly, he says, there has to be a Being — “a ‘first mover’ to design and initiate the intelligent design, and then see that it was carried out.” As well, there has to be a Power; “That is, humans can’t create power,” clarifies the San Francisco-native. “They can only utilize and amplify power that already exists.” Yet beyond all scientific evidence, the clinching proof of a living God was the love that filled Marcellino, after responding to his heart’s cry. “There is a beautiful, beautiful experience waiting inside us ... with Jesus Christ,” he says, “but we need to come to understand that.”
